Who is who ›››

The book is a snapshot of the lives of people as in 1959 and ends, with rare exceptions, on the date of completion of the search for Dyatlov group.
The Who is Who contains, where possible, complete biographies, including data after 1959.

Some clips are directly related to the contents of the book, but most of them gave us the feeling of the time and people. What was life like in Ivdel, 1959, what did people talk about. It is easy to judge from the convenience of your couch, but imagine what would it be if you traveled all the way to Northern Urals, and found a clipping of a newspaper dating March 1959 with Chudinov's name in it. It is now being presented to you too much too fast, but try to let it sink in.

I was sent the following messages from Jeremy Siperly after he saw the Expedition unknown episodes with Josh Gates: "It was through your emotions, looking into your eyes, I could tell that this meant so much more. I could just see the impact this was having on you, your mind swirling. It seemed much more like a religious crusade for you, having invested so much of yourself into the case. I want you to know that to the careful and observant western viewer, this did shine through. I can’t tell you how much I love that aspect."

Writing this book was and still is a "religious crusade for us". Excuse us that every small scrap of paper dating 1959 excites us so. It turned out that this is what cracked the case at the end.

Russian Abbreviations ›››

PO Boxes

In order to ensure the secrecy of defense enterprises in 1927 a system of code names was introduced and "Mailboxes" (PO Boxes) were used in conjunction with the city name and a enterprise number e.g. Leningrad, 22 PO Box 496. In every city that had defense enterprises, there were PO boxes 1, 2, 3, etc. Then in the 1950s the "mailboxes" became part of the conventional name (Enterprise PO Box 123)...

Excerpt:

Crash course

February 6, 1959

If you are stickler, the date is taken from the earliest document in the case files but the same question applies - why is the first document in the case files dated February 6, 1959 if the group was expected to report not earlier than February 12, 1959? having a document with this date is even more implicated, otherwise it could be a mistake. Who was asking questions a week before the group was due back?

Photo of alleged Mansi sanctuary

Because of the legends the Dyatlov case this rock on the Lozva river is now more popular than the real Mansi sanctuary on Lozva river. This cave is in a different place. On a hiking photo is just a rock on the banks of the Lozva.

February 1959. Mt Chistop.

* A teaser not included in the book

Was anyone near Dyatlov and his people at the time of the tragedy? Another hiking team, five men and five women from the Pedagogical Institute, Sverdlovsk, with similar qualifications as those of the Dyatlov group, were on a trek of the same category of difficulty (III) about 33 km (21 miles) southeast of Dyatlov Pass. They were on the west slope of Mt. Chistop when they saw a bright object arching silently, south to north, over the Ural Range, giving out a strong glow. The backlighting of the low-floating clouds, at an altitude of 2.5-3 km (8,200-9,850 ft), was so unusual that Mihail Vladimirov exclaimed, “I wish I could take a picture!” – but he did not dare take off his gloves at -50°C (-58°F). The object glided west over the mountains for about 15-17 km (9-10 mi) and then disappeared over the horizon, leaving a bright trail in the low clouds. Mihail Vladimirov later wrote that they thought this was the Dyatlov group firing a flare from Otorten to celebrate their ascent.

No one from Vladimirov’s team slept on that freezing night. They all huddled by the fire, waiting for the dawn to break, and they survived thanks to the fire, which they kept up all night, and the perseverance with which they nudgedeach other awake when someone was about to fall asleep.

The fact that the flares were fired not for celebration, but in a rescue operation looking for them, the observers of the sky on fire, did not at any point cross their minds.

After nights of sub-zero temperatures, there followed quiet, sunny and very frosty days. Even on their skis, the Shumkov group were constantly falling over in the snow, and were ever fearful that someone might break a leg. When they saw a flare, or the Northern Lights, after their freezing ascent to Mt. Chistop, the group had been skiing for nearly fifteen hours towards people and warmth. On finally reaching District 41, they were greeted with, “We didn’t think we would ever see you again.” The Shumkov group’s route on the way to Chistop went through Polunochnoe – Northern district – Burmantovo – and further east. They had not been to District 41 before, where the Dyatlov group was on January 26, 1959. Loggers and workers in District 41 had no knowledge of the Shumkov expedition, but they had heard that a group of hikers had died, and when they saw Shumkov’s people, they thought it was the Dyatlov team coming back from the dead. That was on February 7, twelve days before Vizhay officially announced that there was no sign of the Dyatlov group, and its members were pronounced missing.

Prologue. Polunochnoe.

The first settlers of Polunochnoe came in 1938 - they were surveyors and geologists. They appeared here before the war.
In 1939, the construction of the Polunochnoe Mine began.
In June 1940, the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR and the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) ordered the People's Commissariat of Ferrous Metallurgy to conduct surveys and design the construction of the Ivdel-Polunochnoe railway. In the fall of 1940, surveyors and geologists began detailing the data of previous exploration and marking the future open pit of the Polunochnoe mine. At the same time, work was underway to find the route of the Ivdel - Polunochnoe railway line.
In July 1941, people and equipment from the Nikopol-Marganets trust evacuated from the Dnipropetrovsk region arrived at Polunochnoe.
At the end of August 1941, the first manganese ore of the Polunochnoe mine was mined.
Prisoners of Ivdellag were brought in the area in 1941.
By October 1941, the Ivdel labor camp (Ivdellag) was assigned the task of meeting the construction and operational needs of the Polunochnoe manganese mine.
On October 27, 1941, an agreement was concluded between the Ivdellag of the NKVD of the USSR and the Polunochnoe mine administration, according to which Ivdellag provides the mine administration with up to 2,000 workers for use in the construction of the Ivdel-Polunochnoe railway line.

Case officer The Soviet/Russian militia/police/MVD/KGB term оперуполномоченный "operupolnomochenniy" (authorized operative) may be rendered into English as a special agent, since the responsibilities in that office were similar to the FBI’s SA (Special Agent). A more authentic alternative is case officer e.g. of the Ivdel city Militia station. In some contexts it could also be translated as investigator.

"Leonid Mihaylovich Chudinov, head of the Polunochnoe militia station, took the disturbing news [about the dead hikers] close to heart." - this is a quote from the book.

The second publication does not directly relate to Chudinov, but shows that the problem of poaching was relevant all the time. It also shows who else is roaming and hiding in the woods.

The Sverdlovsk hiking club was established thanks to Maslennikov’s initiative and insistence. He was the first Master of Sports of the USSR in hiking in the Urals region (1955). Maslennikov was the first to describe many routes through the Subpolar Urals. His guide books since 1956 opened the region for thousands of hikers from all parts of the country. In 1954, Maslennikov organized and led the first large hiking expedition to the Subpolar Urals, with climbing all its major summits. The names given at the time by the Maslennikov group is still on the map.

Ivdellag

August 16, 1937, on the basis of the logging enterprise of the Uralles trust, the Ivdel forced labor camp, known as Ivdellag, was organized. By 1959, the structure and subordination of Ivdellag changed several times. On December 1, 1957, all forest camps were transferred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the RSFSR, in the structure of which in February 1958 the Main Special Directorate of the Forest Industry of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Glavspetslesprom) was created to manage the activities of the forest industry camps.

By this time, the number of prisoners in the Ivdel camps had significantly decreased: as of January 1, 1959, the number of Ivdellag was 15 148 people. As of January 1, 1943 the number of Ivdellag was 160 205 people. In 1959 Ivdellag was known as Enterprise N-240 and consisted of five departments and four separate colonies.

Departments:
N-240/2, sawmill, Ivdel-3 settlement (included 3 camps);
N-240/6, settlement Shipichnoe (3 camps, 1 sub-assignment);
N-240/7, settlement Horpiya (3 camps, 2 sub-assignment);
N-240/8, Vizhay village (3 camps, 1 sub-assignment);
N-240/9, settlement Ponil (5 camp, 1 business trip)

Colonies:
N-240/4, Ivdel (2 camps, 2 sub-assignments);
N-240/12, settlement Kombinata - forwarding point;
N-240/13, settlement Losiniy;
N-240/25, settlement Nadymovka.

The office of the institution was located in Ivdel.

The city of Ivdel administratively consisted of several villages, which were located at a considerable distance from each other. The population consisted mostly of "those who sat and those who guarded". According to the memoirs, very often those who guarded ended up behind bars for various crimes. And those who were in prison, after their release, often remained to live and work in Ivdel. On the territory of the district, massive logging was carried out, and not only by the forces of prisoners. So in June 1958 in Ivdel the Energolesokombinat was created, which was part of the All-Union Trust "Energoles" of the Ministry of Power Plants of the USSR.

It was planned to build a mast impregnation plant in the area of Pershino station (production of supports for power lines) within 2-3 years.

There were 2 mining administrations: Marsyatskoe (with a base in the village of Staraya Sama), which from 1953 had been mining iron ore at the Samskoe and Talinskoe deposits, and Polunochnoe, which had been mining manganese at the Polunochnoe mine since 1941. In the same place, in the village of Polunochnoe, by 1960 two parties of geophysicists were based.

Exploration parties of various subordination actively worked in the region. Including the party of the Northern Geological Exploration Expedition (Severnaya GRE), based directly in Ivdel. It is the Northern Expedition that will take the most active part in the search for the Dyatlov group.

Very valuable source used in the translation "The Gulag Study" by Michael E. Allen (p.20)

Н-240/2, Лесозавод, пос.Ивдель-3 (включал 3 лагпункта);
Н-240/6, пос.Шипичный (3 лагпункта, 1 подкомандировка);
Н-240/7, пос.Хорпия (3 лагпункта, 2 подкомандировки);
Н-240/8, пос.Вижай (3 лагпункта, 1 подкомандировка);

Н-240/4, г.Ивдель (2 лагпункта, 2 подкомандировки);
Н-240/12, пос.Комбината - пересыльеый пункт;
Н-240/13, пос.Лосиный;

Ivanov's archive

Chronologically, search films from Ivanov's archive belong to this period.

In Ivanov's archive there are 16 films from Dyatlov case. №№ 1, 6, 8-10, 17 - photos taken by Dyatlov group; №№ 2-5, 7, 11-13, 15-16 - search photos from which №№ 2, 4 - photos from the morgue; films №14, 18-19 refer to other cases that Ivanov conducted. A total of 19 rolls were handed by A.L. Ivanova in 2009 (wrapped in pieces of paper with Ivanov's comments). Films №№ 4, 5, 7, 12 have characteristic lateral "smears", including the photographs of the labaz. Yarovoy claimed in the book that he had taken part in the inspection of the labaz. There is an assumption that all films with "smears" were made with Yarovoy's camera.

Film №11

11-001: At the outlier rock. Ivanov (left)
11-008 - 11-010: Search on the slope of height 1079. Tipikin in the light jacket.
11-011: "Chum". According to Savva Bahtiyarov, the Mansi have permanent rest stop at the border of the forest, where they take breaks and make a fire. In order not to look for firewood next time, they cut birch branches making them the same length and dry them by leaning them in a shape of a "tent".
According to Androsov this is a Mansi sacrificial place so that the wolves don't attack the herd, so that the deer do not get sick, so that there is a good offspring, so that there is a lot of food, and that the Mansi themselves are healthy.
11-014: Search on the slope of height 1079. Karelin in gaiters with two stripes.
11-015: Search on a slope in the area where Kolmogorova's body was found.
11-018: Maslennikov and Atmanaki. The photo was included in the case files vol.2 sheet 76.
11-019: Korolyov
11-022, 11-023: Search on the slope. Karelin in the center with glasses and striped dark gaiters.
11-025, 11-026: Search on the slope in the area of the tent. Presumably Korolyov and Bardin.
11-031 - 11-033: Photos were taken from the 4th tributary of the Lozva between the mouths of the right and left tributaries.
11-031: Search in the lower part of the slope in the 4th tributary. 1st left - Atmanaki; 3rd left - Tipikin; 6st left - Karelin; 7th left - Sogrin
In the background is the summit of Pumsalnel, 8.5 km away. A dark hill in front of the Pumsalnel summit is height 657.7, about 2 km from where the photo was taken, in the forest on the right bank of the Lozva. The photo was taken exactly in the north direction. The mouth of the right near stream is to the right of the photographer; between the third and fourth (left) searchers, a cedar tree is visible, standing on the right bank of the 4th tributary directly opposite the mouth of the left stream.

Anti-tank mines used for exploration

In case of checking a gamma anomaly, given the limited capabilities, the works might be done with a method borrowed from the practice of the leasing system of excavation of the radioactive ore by the MVD of the USSR in 1945 48: "The works were conducted in the most primitive way – by manual short-hole drilling. Next, blasting out, collecting, and sifting chlopinite (aka hlopinite) – a pitch-black mineral containing uranium. Antimagnetic anti-tank mines weighing up to 5 kg were used as explosives."

New findings on magnetic anomaly in the area of Dyatlov pass

In chapter 19 we say: "In 2020, local magnetic anomalies were discovered on the eastern and southern slopes of Mt. Kholat Syakhl."

This information was taken from the posts of Aleksander Alekseenkov on the forums. On February 2, 2021, he spoke at the annual conference organized by the Dyatlov Group Memory Foundation. Links to his announcement:

Researchers found a new natural anomaly on Dyatlov pass (ura.news)
Researchers found a new natural anomaly on Dyatlov pass. Aleksander Alekseenkov, a researcher of the tragedy from Moscow, told about this during the annual Dyatlov group conference. For many years in a row, twice a year (in summer and winter), he traveled to the Dyatlov Pass to conduct various experiments. In 2020 he used a magnetometer from one of the laboratories.

"My expectations were justified: a magnetic anomaly was discovered a few hundred meters from the tent site, - said Aleksander Alekseenkov. - The gradient (spread) of the measurement was from several units to several tens of units, and in that place - right up to 1700 units, that is, the difference is several orders of magnitude."

Similar information can be found on:

A magnetic anomaly was discovered at the Dyatlov pass. However, it does not affect the compass readings in any way and is local.

Version: hikers at the Dyatlov pass died due to a magnetic anomaly (kp.ru)
According to the researcher there is a magnetic anomaly underground not far from the place where the tent of the Dyatlov group stood.

Lezhnevka - temporary timber road

One of Prudkov’s interests had become specific injuries "inflicted on deteriorated plank roads (‘lezhnevki’), made of logs lined transversely with planks nailed on top to serve as a track. Often one of the planks’ ends disengaged from the logs and pricked up like a spear. If a car bumped up against it at night or in poor visibility, the plank would thrust through the car, piercing through the people who happened on its way. The wounded had to be sawed out; and later in surgery, it would take an effort to extract the huge debris to save the patient’s life."

When was the tent found and why was it kept a secret for two days

Book

Yarovoy (Kosobryuhov) is introduced in chapter 5. Here we cite the book based on his first hand observations as member in the search for Dyatlov group. The confusion about the discovery of the tent found its way in his account of the events. The names are made up, although you can tell who is who (Kozhar=Ivdel, Vasyukov=Slobtsov, 1350=1079, Sosnovskiy group=Dyatlov group), and the dates of the events in the story differ from the real ones, but the sequence is strictly observed. No matter how you count it there shouldn't be two radiograms on two different dates about the discovery of the tent.

YAROVOY (KOSOBRYUHOV) Yuri Evgenievich (1932-1980) - in 1959 - correspondent for the newspaper "Na smenu!" (On Duty!) He was sent to the headquarters of the Search operation in Ivdel on February 22. He was flown to height 1079 and participated in the search from February 27 to March 3. His book "The highest category of difficulty" based on the story of the Dyatlov group came out in 1966.

From "The highest category of difficulty"

Chapter 11.

...the radio operator turned on the speakerphone and said that he had caught the call signs of Vasgokov's detachment. Immediately, without any delay, he began to decipher the squeak of the Morse code: "Kozhar, Krotova. We went to the pass at the peak "1350". On the eastern slope of the peak, under the snow, we found a tent of Sosnovskiy's group. The tent was torn. There are many clothes and food inside. No members of Sosnovskiy group were found. The wind is knocking us down. We are forced to stop searching and retreat into the forest. Vasyukov".
— Will there be a reply back? — asked the radio operator.
There was no answered.

Chapter 13.

They chose the most difficult of all the options: from Tur-Chakyr, without returning to the mouth of the Northern Tochi, they crossed the Chimpay ridge at an altitude of one thousand two hundred meters and went through a gorge along the Malik River to the second pass at the height "1350". It was there that Vasyukov's detachment found their tent.

There are seventy kilometers between Tur-Chakyr and the peak "1350" on the map. To walk seventy kilometers through the mountains, it took at least four days. So, they were under the top on February 4 or 5. And today is already the fifteenth.

This is a direct continuation of the story about the radiogram about the discovery of the tent (Chapter 12 is the story about the trek). So the radiogram arrived on February 15.

Novikov threw up his hands:
— While I can only guess, I need to inspect the tent myself...
— Tomorrow, on the very first flight, we will drop you and Voronov there, - the colonel promised at once.

This is the continuation of the conversation after receiving the radiogram. It is happening on February 15.

Chapter 15.

On February 15 in the morning we were going to fly from Kozhar to the top of "1350", where yesterday the tent of Sosnovskiy's group was found. The helicopter was loaded with food, sleeping bags, tents.

February 15 again. Although tomorrow should be February 16. So when did the radiogram about the discovery of the tent arrive? Is Yarovoy confusing 15th and 14th, or were there two radiograms in two different days, and Yarovoy knew about them?

Traces of depressed snow near the tent

There are very deep roots in any fact cited in the book that can and should be traced back to its origin.

This mention, with minor minor differences, could be found in several sources. For example:
Maria. Mikhail Sharavin answers questions from followers and researchers of the Dyatlov group case. (samlib.ru)

Question: In one of your interviews you said that not far from the Dyatlov group's tent, a small area of blown snow in the form of a circle was clearly visible. Do you think it could have been from a helicopter landing there? At the time you saw many times helicopters landing and taking off. Can you compare with the tracks they left? Or was the snow melted and icy, but again, in the form of a circle?

Sharavin: The circle of blown snow was larger than that of a helicopter propeller. This was reported in the search radiograms. Later, this notebook with a record of all messages from the search was confiscated by the "competent" authorities, the room was closed and the watch was stopped. This is evidenced by one of the then on duty Galya... who made a repentance, that is, a statement 50 years later.

Maria. (samlib.ru)

It is up to you what do you make out of this information. Our comment is the following:

We are extremely skeptical about this information:
- this swept-out circle is not visible in any search photograph of 1959, although many of them show the slope in the area of the tent;
- not mentioned in the case files;
- it is not clear whether Sharavin himself saw it, or repeats from the words of Batalova, who could have misinterpreted something said in the radiograms. The radiogram itself has not survived if ever existed.

This information is often used by supporters of conspiracy theories that someone flew to the slope in helicopters, collected fragments of missiles, laid out bodies, etc.

To our knowledge the slope is too steep to land especially since there is an even and very convenient terrain nearby, used by the helicopters to land in 1959 (well documented). Why risk to land a helicopter on the slope?

We are using this information in a different context. If the conspirators wanted to recreate a snowed-in tent they could have removed snow to pile up on top of the tent. It could be traces from some activity around the tent. We do not have information about how wide, or deep, or shaped this track was. It is all made up. This is a perfect example how to build a theory on a sinking sand. The fact is not important for our theory at all, but we have tried to mention in the book all "popular" facts so people could question and trace them before starting using them as supportive facts for a scenario.

Documents referenced in this chapter

On February 28, Tempalov flew away from the pass, taking with him all the group's documents, except for the sketch maps and personal diaries.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lyudmil Georgiev, forensic expert, specialist in traceology, was asked to examine these three photos from the case files with the questions:

  1. Were these prints left by people who were barefoot or shod?
  2. How many people were the footprints left by?
  3. In what direction did the people who left the traces move?

The author of the present assessment studied in the period 1985-86 at the "Faculty of Forensic Science" of the Volgograd School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, now the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Photo №1

  • Formations of three footprints marked with stars;
  • From their shape it can be assumed that they were not left barefoot, but from shoes;
  • In two of the tracks, in the area of the heel, there are dragging (marked with small arrows), indicative of the direction of movement;
  • The direction of movement of the person who formed them is indicated with the bold arrow;
  • From a photograph presented in such a perspective, it can be assumed that the footprints were left by one person.

Conclusion:

  • The footprints were probably left by a person's shod feet, and the direction of movement is indicated in the photo with a bold arrow.

Photo №2

  • Probably left by a left winter shoe; on the left along the length of the trace is straight, on the heel - oval, and on the right in its middle part is arcuate - indicated by the triangle;
  • Fragments resembling a tread (indicated by three arrows) are observed at the bottom of the footprint. It is not possible to establish definitively whether the trace is formed by only one shoe or has been stepped on more than once;
  • The direction of movement is indicated by the extended arrow to the left of the image; in the area from the heel there is a slight drag.

Conclusion:

  • The track was probably left by a man's left winter boot, moving in the direction indicated in the photo by the extended arrow. It is possible that the track has been stepped on more than once.

Photo №3

In photo №3, arrows indicate the formations resembling footprints. They are volumetric, three-dimensional, this is what the light and shadows show, making the impression that they look convex above the terrain and in relation to the background of the surrounding surface, instead of being concave, which is usual in the case with steps left in snow. If this "protrusion" is not due to a photographic effect made intentionally or obtained in the process of developing the film and subsequently copying the photograph, it can be assumed that the initially formed tracks were concave due to the nature of the traces left in snow surface; subsequently the traces have softened, half melted in case of possible temperature rise or sunlight. When the temperatures dropped again the traces hardened, and the wind has further blown away the powdery snow, which is lateral to the frozen tracks.

  • In the photo, the formations resembling footprints are about 13, pointed with arrows;
  • They are not formed by barefoot, but by shod feet. The shape and width of the footprints is clearly indicative of this, although due to the angle of the photo or due to the snowfall, no fragments of tread can be seen;
  • They are left by at least two people; the tracks are not in the usual path left by one person; overlap is observed in some of the footprints; at the upper right end of the photo there is also a distance between the tracks;
  • The tracks are formed when walking or moving faster, and not as a result of running; the type of the trail of the tracks is indicative for this;
  • The presumed direction of movement is indicated on the photo by a bold arrow.

Conclusion:

  • The traces were probably left by at least two people whose feet were shod. Their direction of movement is indicated in the photo with a bold arrow.

Dead cedar dendrology analysis

Dead Cedar

A 10m tall cedar lying on the ground 5m away from where the bodies of Doroshenko and Krivonischneko were found was analyzed by an expert dendrologist Assoc. Prof. PhD Momchil Panayotov and the last ring is from 1958. In the photos from February 1959, this tree is already on the ground, covered with snow, so much that it can not be seen. The dating shows the tree fell after the end of 1958 and before the first bodies of the Dyatlov group were found.   Read the article →

This is the pinnacle of my research into the Dyatlov case. I imagine Igor Pavlov smiling from the heavens. It is one thing to build a theory empirically, but to go to the place of the tragedy and find the actual cause cannot be simply by chance. Igor Pavlov was taken away far too early, so by intuition or foresight, he placed his legacy into my hands. I finally found what he was looking for. This is opening a new chapter in our investigation.

In the book "1079" the authors predicted what was later corroborated, five meters from the bodies of Doroshenko and Krivonischenko there is a tree that has fallen in the first month of 1959.
